Priorities

  • Balancing Academic Rigor with Inclusive Environments

Academic rigor is extremely important; however, students' mental health is paramount to their success both inside and outside of the classroom. As a school psychologist for many years in the district, I have seen students experience and demonstrate angst, anxiety, bullying behavior, and competitiveness in part because of the measures used to assess academic achievement. Programs and services that are based on the underpinning of inclusivity, and support every student, including those with disabilities, English language learners, and students that need academic and/or emotional support are vitally important.

  • Supporting Social Emotional Learning Curriculum

“Soft Skills" are crucial in today's climate, especially with the amount of social media our students use on a daily basis. As a member of the board, I would vote to re-implement the social emotional learning curriculum that was removed in the elementary schools in 2022. Since then, our district has seen a rise in behavioral issues. Parents deserve their tax-dollars respected (the curriculum was purchased, but is not allowed to be used by teachers in gen ed classes), and educators should be able to use every tool in their toolkits to support learners at all stages of their development. A student shown support in 5K is a student better equipped for 5th grade, 8th grade, high school and beyond.

  • Setting the Tone of Collaboration

On a healthy board, School Board members listen to educators' voices and provide leadership, not micromanagement. I want to see this again, and believe it is possible. Our district is accustomed to receiving accolades, and those accolades are in large part due to the collaborative efforts between educators, parents and students that care about their education. The board should set a tone that allows all members of the community to feel their voice is heard and valued.

  • Community Involvement and Transparency

The Cedarburg School District has live-streamed board meetings in the past, and allowed public comment during committee meetings. As a board member, I would make a recommendation to re-implement these opportunities for community involvement. Students are more likely to succeed academically and feel supported when parents understand decisions the board makes. Residents are more likely to show their support, when they also have opportunities to see meetings in real-time, and know that their voices will be listened to.
